NHG's K-12 system approaches the Canh Dieu Textbook

To prepare for the implementation of the new 2018 general education program, the "Introduction of Canh Dieu Textbook for Grade 1" seminar took place on the 24th February at the office of Nguyen Hoang Group (NHG) with the attendance of managing board and 200 grade 1 teachers, staff from 18 schools in the NHG's K-12 system; publishers and compiler team.

From the academic year 2020-2021, the MoET officially implements the new general education program to grade 1 students. In which, instead of having 1 set of textbook as before, the new program will have many different sets of textbook and schools can actively select depending on their usage. “When we have more privilege to be active, more freedom, it is a way of living that we will be more responsible. The first responsibility is that the NHG and the schools will select and decide which set of textbook will be applied for the curriculum", Dr. Do Manh Cuong, Deputy General Director of NHG shared.

The seminar introduced the Canh Dieu Grade 1's Textbook which is connected online to 18 schools of NHG's K-12 system so that teachers and staff from far provinces can directly send questions to the compilation team.

Bringing life into lessons

Canh Dieu Textbook is one of the 5 textbooks approved by the MoET and the only textbook compiled by socialization in Vietnam since 1975. Sharing about the textbook, Dr. Do Manh Cuong supposed that this textbook is appropriate for experiential learning and competency-based learning methods - which NHG curriculum has always focused on.

“At NHG education system, the curriculum's content cannot be separated from life. Revolving around questions like who we are, what is this world like ..., students cannot experience any contexts, situations, factors outside their life. The steps of experiential learning include: creating a context where students can explore, recall, reflect and learn from the experience by themselves in order to apply it into reality. In addition, in terms of measurement and evaluation, the school should acknowledge the importance of evaluating the process. If a test helps us assess what a student learned, textbook is a tool to help us know how the student is learning ”, Dr. Cuong shared.

Professor Nguyen Minh Thuyet, Editor-in-Chief cum Editor of Vietnamese Textbook 1, Editor-in-Chief of the 2018 General Education Program stated that: “NHG is a corporation specializing in education and has an enormous school system, not only in Ho Chi Minh City but also in many other provinces and cities across the country. I believe that NHG has quite an advanced mindset, the first thing is the human factor. NHG's people develop education with a good will and a good heart. With people like that, we will have great steps towards positive results”.

Professor Thuyet shared that implementing the Canh Dieu Textbook into NHG's K-12 system will be beneficial for students with appropriate chosen sets of textbook, thereby they could achieve good academic results and enhance the school's reputation. "NHG education system satisfies the facilities' requirements for applying this textbook, such as school supplies, adequate class sizes, well-trained teachers ...", Professor said.

The Canh Dieu Textbook is a completed, consistent and only set of textbook covering all of Grade 1's subjects according to the Decision No. 4507/QD dated 21/11/2019 of the MoET.

Bringing lessons into life

At the seminar, the compilers and authors of this textbook introduced, explained and answered new elements in the Canh Dieu textbook which meet the requirement of the general education program; the practical application in the lessons of this textbook with the spirit of innovation appropriate for the psychology of grade 1 students; supporting online training and instructing how to use grade 1 textbook's e-materials in teaching.
NHG's staff and teachers have sent questions about the book to the compilation team, in which highlight some contents: "What is the essence of the book?", flexibility in teaching, how teachers need to innovate, what students need to do... The book has a philosophy of "Bringing life into lessons - bringing lessons into life".

The authors of the textbook are scientists, teachers from universities, research institutes and educational institutions throughout the country, those who have prestige, capacity and experience in compiling textbooks, including the Editor-in-Chief of the 2018 General Education Program and most of the members in the 2018 General Education Program Development Department, they are the Editors and authors of the subjects and educational activities' programs: Vietnamese - Literature, Mathematics, Nature and Society, Science, Natural Science, Informatics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Music, Arts, Physical Education...

The Canh Dieu grade 1 textbook alone has gathered 6 over 8 experts who are the Chief Editor of the 2018 General Education Program, the Editor of the Subject Program of the 2018 General Education Program is the Chief Editor cum Editor of the Grade 1 Textbook. University of Education Publisher (under Hanoi University of Education) and HCMC University of Education Publisher (under HCMC University of Education) compiled the grade 1 textbook.

Associate Professor Do Tien Dat, Editor of Mathematics Textbook 1, author of the 2018 General Education Program in Mathematics introduced Mathematics Textbook 1.

Meritorious Artist Ngo Tran Ai - Head of Director of Canh Dieu Textbook, Chairman of the Board of Management cum General Director of Vietnam Educational Equipment - Publication Investment Joint Stock Company - VEPIC (white shirt) attended the seminar.

Managing board, teachers, heads of grade 1 of schools: iSchool International Integration Education, UK Academy International Bilingual School, School of North America attended the seminar.

Carrying the meaning of the kite (Canh Dieu) which is associated with student-life and flying dreams, all the lessons in the Canh Dieu Textbook are tied to real life just like how the kite attaches to the ground by its string. Therefore, the textbook helps students have the opportunity to spread their wings in the immense sky of knowledge, flying like a kite in windy day.

NHG develops a standard learning materials

Earlier, on December 18th, NHG and National Geographic Learning (NGL) signed the memorandum of understanding on exchanging and training  cooperation in NHG education system.

NGL is a collaboration between the National Geographic Association and Cengage - the world's leading educational publisher in general education, higher education, libraries and reference materials which create the world's most valuable material treasure. It is known that the Canh Dieu English textbook 1, compiled and edited by NGL, has been approved to be applied by the MoET from the school year 2020-2021.
