SNA to attend first-aid and emergency escape training course with Australian specialist

01/22/2018

Recently, nearly 800 staff members, teachers and students from International Schools of North America – SNA (a school of NHG located in Him Lam residential area, Saigon South, HCMC) have attended a first-aid and escape training course with first-aid and emergency specialist Tony Coffey from Australia. Mr. Tony Coffey is currently working for the Sydney Rescue Association and the New South Wales Rescue Academy. He’s been training in voluntary rescue and emergency care for Australian organizations and enterprises for 20 years. He’s also founded and run Survivor Emergency Care Training in Australia. Since 2014, he has started his long-term business trips to offer free courses on First Aid to many schools in Vietnam. He and his voluntary team have successfully designed a free first-aid app for Vietnamese speakers in September 2017

The first 4 minutes after the accident is the golden time to minimize the risk of the injury. However, many people still perform the incorrect first-aid techniques and thus possibly aggravate it.

Statistics from a hospital in Hanoi has shown that up to 50% people suffer unfortunate consequences due to receiving wrong first aid or not receiving any at all in an accident.

During the training course, Tony Coffey – Australia’s top first-aid and emergency specialist indicated common mistakes people usually make and gave SNA teachers and students first-aid instructions.

Accordingly, SNA students practised skills to effectively deal with students’ common injuries such as fracture, sprain, dislocation and drowning. They also learned how to handle emergencies like how to stop bleeding, identify a stroke, cope with unconsciousness, cardiac arrest, choking, electrocution…Besides, SNA students learned about escape skills in case of fire or gas leaks. Specialist Tony Coffey attracted students’ attention by giving real cases, such as what to do with a neck cut or how to preserve an amputated body part… The first-aid steps were explicitly instructed by Mr. Tony Coffey and Ms. Trang Jena Nguyen, and the students volunteered to practise on models.

Ton Nu Cam Quynh from class 10V2 said: The training today is interesting. We have learned a lot of practical techniques. After the training, I realized I have all along misunderstood some of the basic first aid steps. Thanks to the teacher’s careful instructions, I think I can handle it if I fall in any similar dangerous situation.” According to Quynh, the most useful technique she learned was drowning treatment because she loves swimming and has many time seen her friends in drowning situations."

In the development process, NHG has always focused on cooperating with prestigious education organizations and international partners to continuously develop life skills and living values education programs, with the aim to form generations full of humanity. The first-aid and escape training course at SNA has also expressed NHG’s human values. It not only equips students with survival skills but also teaches them to be responsible for themselves and society through saving themselves and people around them.

In the near future, NHG will carry out these first-aid and escape training courses for other member of NHG education system like Saigon Academy International Kindergarten System (SGA), International Integrated School System (iSchool), UK Academy International Bilingual School System (UKA), Hong Bang International University (HIU) and Baria – Vungtay University (BVU).
