What makes the IBDP at SNA attractive?
Thanks to the philosophy of humanistic education that promotes self-awareness and understanding of cultural diversity in the world, IB organization (IBO) has become famous and prestigious in the education sector. Most recently, the International Schools of North America (SNA) was officially authorized to teach the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) in Vietnam.
Dr. Vu Thi Phuong Anh, Director of Education Quality Assurance Department, Nguyen Hoang Group (NHG) and Mr. Huynh Thanh Phi, International Education Quality Assurance Specialist of NHG, shared the philosophy that is the foundation of IB's goals, objectives, focus and curriculums which will be implemented at SNA from academic year 2020-2021.

Understanding themselves and others
Not only is it prestigious and attractive thanks to recognition from universities around the world and the benefits that IB graduates have, but it’s IB’s educational philosophy that builds program‘s reputation.
Starting out as a modest but promising organization, IBO was founded in 1968 by four visionary founders, John Goormaghtigh, Desmond Cole-Baker, Alec Peterson and Gérard Renaud, to create and maintain a program for students aged 16 to 19.
The goal of the program is to "provide a degree program recognized by international universities for a growing number of young people from different places whose parents were members of diplomatic organizations, international and multinational organizations".
The IBO has now helped educate more than 1.5 million students in more than 5,000 schools in 150 countries worldwide from a wide range of cultural, socio-economic backgrounds.
A statement on the IBO’s mission in 1996 is that: "In addition to the rigor of intellectual ability and high academic standards, IB also emphasizes on the ideals of international understanding and civic responsibility”.

In 2006, IB published another statement: “The IB aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. … These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right” (IBO, 2006).
Although there has been a change in the term "international understanding and civic responsibility" to “intercultural understanding and respect", IB's unchanging ideal mission is to create students that "understand themselves better and understand the differences of others", according to Mr. Roger Peel, IB’s Director General (term 1983-1998).
Interdisciplinary approach
The IB’s educational philosophy is also reflected in the content of each curriculum. The IBDP consists of six subject groups. Students need to choose a subject in areas such as: First language (the language in which they already have academic competence), second language, Humanities, Science, and Mathematics. The final subject may belong to the Arts field, or the student may choose another subject in the above areas.

These courses help equip students with life’s foundation based on the nature of knowledge and values of different cultures, the common values of humanity, the awareness of historical and social contexts with a multi-dimensional perspective.
Students will have to choose three subjects at the Higher Level (ideal subjects related to personal interests and future careers) to gain in-depth knowledge. The The IBDP also consists of compulsory subjects and activities, including Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay (EE) and CAS (short for Creativity, Action and Service) to motivate students to participate in extracurricular activities. The IBDP emphasizes on intellectual challenges through an interdisciplinary approach towards learning.
This method helps develop emotional intelligence, cultural knowledge, motivation, openness, thinking, and life skills for students. The characteristics that IB students acquire upon graduation will become the essential factors that help each individual become responsible citizens in the 21st century locally, nationally and globally.
