The two speakers from the skills-based classroom publication “Beyond the book: The Power of real” of National Geographic Learning were Ms. Julie Hwang, marketing manager for academic services at National Geographic Learning and author of the book Oxford Skill Word with Mr. Paul Grainger, a teacher, self-access learning coordinator, speaker, and product manager, with 25 years’ professional experience in education.
Bring the World to the Classroom
In the program, Ms. Julie Hwang shared some creative tactics to attract students in English classes. In which, there were some tips on combining technology and teaching skills for encouraging students to communicate and interact with each other more often to make learning English more interesting. She also talked about how to use presentation tools and classroom management systems most efficiently, helping students to improve speaking and writing skills.

From her point of view, in a class, there are students with different capacities to learn. Therefore, excellent ones do not want to study in class because they think that the lessons are not interesting, and average ones also do not want to study because they think that they cannot keep up with the lessons. How to keep balance in a class with different capacities is a difficult problem.
“As teachers, we all know technology is a powerful tool to use with young learners. It can increase student motivation and make instruction more authentic and engaging for students. With the desire of sharing and connecting, we come here to suggest some creative ways. Through the program, I see that teachers in NHG system are very dedicated, dynamic, positive and active to interact with each other in the training session. They are great learners hence, they will become great teachers.” – shared my Ms. Julie Hwang.

Teachers joined the training session of Mr. Paul Grainger to learn about “Engaging students through the power of real”. Since then, teachers understood the importance and benefits of exposing students to real world content through videos, photography, infographics and texts. Watching videos of young learners from around the world can enrich the students learning experience and interest them in the lesson content. In which, videos can help explain grammar structures, vocabulary, examples of dialogues, visualization of answers, or enhance the development of key skills such as speaking and writing.
Mr. Paul Grainger said the blended learning method would be successful in a Vietnam context. “This method will help increase students’ hours of learning English naturally and effectively. The most important thing is making a mutual standard for programs and methods throughout the whole system”.

The program helped teachers understand deeply about the publication philosophy of National Geographic Learning and their unique way to create materials for teaching English. Accordingly, the goal of National Geographic Learning is to “Bring the World to the Classroom and the Classroom to Life”. This is also an opportunity for teachers to learn many helpful tactics to promote teaching quality in the future.
